Through a series of events, I started working as a consultant to the Department of Corrections in around 2006, and I was assigned to the California Medical Facility. We have nurses who have extra training in palliative care. We have medical social workers who support the patients. Michele: Yep. We have a psychiatrist.

I’m a geriatrically trained social worker and it was my grandmother. Started as a direct case manager, worked in a variety of different places including the state legislature and I’ve been with the state office now since 2006. They’re older and frailer than a nursing home client is.

Malaz: One day I was in internal medicine residency and I had to take care of a patient who was admitted from a nursing home with dementia. For me, right now, the worst thing, my nightmare is dying from dementia alone in a nursing home. People start thinking about putting them in a nursing home. Diane: Huge.
