Hospice of the Chesapeake Appoints New CMO Maryland-based Hospice of the Chesapeake recently named Dr. Marny Fetzer as its new chief medical officer. Fetzer is currently system medical director for palliative care and hospice services at Illinois-based Ascension Health. He was previously medical director at Compassus since 2017.

With the labor shortage, there’s just not enough doctors, nurses or caregivers, and just not a lot of just health care providers in general. I worked in Phoenix at the sheriff’s office from 1976 to 2012. I was in charge of the jail system, which had about 10,000 inmates at that time, and we contracted out for medical care across five clinics and had a small inpatient unit. It comes with hiring the right medical directors and clinicians to make sure patients are eligible.

An OIG study of hospice billing claims submitted during 2012 found that 31% of the GIP claims that providers submitted to CMS were inappropriately billed to the tune of an estimated $268 million that year alone. The industry will also likely see efforts continue to combat fraud, including the aforementioned audits and medical reviews.
