A recent study of nearly 30,000 hospitalized metastatic breast cancer patients found that only 19% received palliative care from 2010 to 2014. Breast cancer patients often lack access to palliative care services, but the needle may be moving as researchers dig into common barriers and clinical and financial outcomes.

We started doing the house calls, mobile palliative care, geriatric primary care work. We started to develop that process in 2014 through 2016 with pilot programs. Does a patient need palliative care, or do they need geriatrics, or do they need primary care? Then I kind of wandered. We have various forms of it.

Because I don’t think we think about that so much in palliative care, but we do in geriatrics. As is the case for many issues in geriatrics: some of the time, not all the time.
