Hospices often lack the financial and staffing resources needed to fully support bereaved families. As with nursing, the industry-wide labor shortage has impacted bereavement care, which is an underfunded service, according to Dr. Dawn Gross, palliative care physician at University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Health.

Muir also has served as the medical director for the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovations’ (CMMI) high-needs Accountable Care Organization Realizing Equity, Access, and Community Health (ACO REACH) program. This will make the organization’s third center for youth bereavement in the area, with additional locations in Auburndale and Sebring, Florida.
