These experiences led him to take a 1-year course in Clinical Pastoral Education – a course that certifies ministers to work in hospitals as chaplains.

Years later, when I was a geriatric fellow, he gave me another gift by asking me to review James Hallenbeck’s remarkable book Palliative Care Perspectives for the Journal of Palliative Medicine. The nurses, aides, chaplains and social workers on our team teach me daily. I look to them all as my guides.

We started having palliative care IDGs, where we would have our medical director sit in on case management and case conferences to understand “should we have actually coded this differently than we did?” We have to get away from that in both palliative care and hospice care. It needs to be a part of what we do.
