‘NEXT STEPs’ Program Focuses on Enhancing Nursing Homes Services, Including Palliative Care

As the U.S. population ages nationwide, seniors have been vastly underrepresented in clinical trials. This is particularly true for people living in the nation’s 15,000-plus nursing homes. Fortunately, due to a recent grant from the National Institutes of Health, that could soon change. The National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) National Institute on Aging (NIA) has granted a $15.5 million award toward the team at Indiana University School of Medicine and the Regenstrief Institute.

Financial Pressures Shut Down 2 Hospice Agencies

A hospital-based hospice program in Kansas is closing its doors, as is the Visiting Nurses Association of Philadelphia. Holton Community Hospital (HCH) will shut down its home health and hospice department effective December 31st. A range of issues contributed to the decision to end the program, including reimbursement pressures on its home health business and the ascendance of Medicare Advantage, which often pays at a lower rate than traditional Medicare.

Recent research has found that receiving high-acuity services alongside supportive care can help ease pain. The findings come as regulators navigate the future outlook of these services in end-of-life care delivery. More than two-thirds (67%) of liver cancer patients receiving radiotherapy concurrently with supportive/palliative care reported reduced pain intensity levels after one month of treatment in a study published in The Lancet Oncology, a Science Direct journal.
